Christmas is O-ver

We wrapped up our O Christmas sermon series yesterday.
The service was more interactive than in the past. It was a bit of an experiment.
(See the previous post for details on the message.)

My highlight was looking out and seeing an 80+ year old (who really clings to a more traditional style of church) quietly get up, walk over to a side wall and write down on a white board how God had blessed his life. He participated. He worshipped.

After service a woman in her 60s thanked me for "a wonderful time of worship."

Experiential worship can be effective for all ages. May we stretch ourselves to worship God in new ways, and to see church as a fluid gathering of believers that won't get bogged down in a limited way to "do church."

A few things we did:
- everyone held a newborn baby diaper in their hands and pondered quietly how miraculous it is that God sent us his son in such a humble way. (Mary pondered these things in her heart.)

- everyone was invited to praise and glorify God by writing down specific praises on white boards that were stationed around the auditorium. (Shepherds glorified God out loud.)

- everyone was encouraged to write down three names on a 2008 Card of people they would intentionally share God's love with this coming year. (Anna told everyone about the newborn Savior.)

- everyone held Monopoly money in their hand and asked themselves how they could share their treasure with God in 2008. They were to write their responses on the back of the paper and keep it in their wallet or purse for a reminder. (The magi gave Jesus their treasure.)

Sneak Preview

I speak tomorrow morning at church. We're wrapping up the third sermon in a series called O Christmas.

We played off of three Christmas songs that began with O.

Tomorrow I focus on O come All Ye Faithful.
I really will focus more of the chorus: O come let us adore Him.

Here's the sneak preview of notes.
After reading the Christmas story chronologically out of the Book of Hope, I'm gonna look at six examples of worship.

  • The angels adored Jesus by publicly praising him.
  • Mary adored Jesus by meditating and quietly pondering about Him.
  • The shepherd adored Jesus by glorifying Him and telling of the good things they had seen.
  • Simeon adored Jesus by declaring truth about him in a prophetic way.
  • Anna adored Jesus by telling others about Him.
  • The magi adored Jesus by giving him treasure.

I have some different experiential applications for each point.

I have to do all this in 30 minutes.

I'll let you know how it all goes down after tomorrow morning.
